The headlines read “A new wave of impotence pills entering pharmacy”. On the bright side, some people still pay for Viagra — $4.50 a pop — but sales have gone up 42% since the drug’s patent expired in 1998. Many people now have erectile dysfunction (ED) medication at their disposal, but little research exists to confirm whether these pills actually help — androzole, the active ingredient in Viagra, has ever had a commercial viability.
So what is new about the new wave of impotence pills? Well, they’re not all that new. ED medications have been around for decades, but they aren’t the only solution. Research has shown that they can actually help people with mild ED, such as those with low blood pressure. In the past, people with diabetes, high cholesterol, or heart disease had some of these medications on the market, but this wave has since gone generic.
Other popular impotence pills include,, and. These drugs work by blocking the production of the hormone androgen in the body, which can help improve blood pressure. As with Viagra, these pills also increase testosterone levels, and they can also help to prevent low testosterone from developing in the first place. However, it’s not all that new.
The latest wave of ED pills has certainly led to a rise in prescriptions for the drugs. Last month, a study published in the journal “Clinical Pharmacology” found that people who took the drugs for at least four years — 30% longer than the average — were twice as likely to have ED as those who didn’t take them for at least six months. (The study was published in the British Medical Journal, and the study’s authors said the drug wasn’t designed to treat ED, but to treat low testosterone.)
“I was shocked to find that, when compared with people who didn’t take any of the drugs, people who took the pills were about three times more likely to have ED,” says study author Dr. John Kline, a urologist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
“This was in the context of people who may be at increased risk of low testosterone, which can happen if the body doesn’t produce enough of the hormone,” he says. “So we wanted to see whether this could be beneficial to people with low testosterone.”
Other research has shown that these medications can help to reduce the frequency of low testosterone in the body. In fact, studies show that those who take them for five to seven days — four to six times longer than a control group — are nearly four times as likely to have ED as those who don’t take them for at least six months. (Viagra doesn’t have an effect on low testosterone, but it does treat high testosterone, which is not common.)
While these drugs are not new, they do have some surprising benefits. Most are similar to the effects of Viagra and similar medications. For example, they have been used to treat erectile dysfunction by treating the symptoms of low testosterone.
“We found that those who took Viagra (or its generic, sildenafil) for at least two years had a slightly better rate of sexual desire, as well as reduced erectile function in the presence of low testosterone,” says Dr. Anthony Gagnon, an assistant professor of urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “That may be true for many other men, but it doesn’t mean that Viagra and sildenafil don’t have a similar effect on erectile function.”
Dr. Kline says that these pills may actually help people with ED to reduce their stress levels.
But, he adds, there’s still a lot of “noise” that needs to be removed from the world of impotence drugs. So while there are plenty of other treatments for ED that might help, none are new for this wave. So if you’re having trouble trying ED drugs, talk to your doctor about getting them off your hands.
